Monash University: 3-year research-only position in late antique Platonism
Applications are invited for a fixed-term 3 year research-only position in
the Philosophy Department at Monash University. This position is funded by a grant from the Australian Research Council and begins from July 2012. The successful applicant will collaborate with Dirk Baltzly in the production of the first English language translation of Proclus Commentary on Plato's Republic. Ideally this collaboration will involve co-authorship of the 3 projected volumes of translation and commentary. The aim is to do for Proclus' Republic Commentary what the research team including Tarrant, Runia, Baltzly and Share have done for Proclus' Timaeus Commentary (Cambridge Uni Press -- 4 volumes published, 2 more in preparation).
The position is full-time and involves no teaching responsibilities.
Remuneration is at level B (equivalent to Lecturer) in the range $92,485 to $109,828. (These figures are inclusive of the 17% superannuation
contribution.)
The successful applicant will, of course, need a very good knowledge of
ancient Greek and strong background in Platonic philosophy. Any extension of the position beyond the life of this 3-year research grant is contingent upon securing additional research funding from some source -- something that is possible, but never easy or assured. Nonetheless, this project would be beneficial to a recent PhD in Philosophy or Classics who wants to spend at least 3-years doing nothing but working on a series of books and associated journal articles.
Specifics of selection criteria and application instructions can be found
at jobs.monash.edu.au, position number 500832. You MUST apply through the university's e-recruitment website. Though I will try to answer any questions you might have, please do NOT send me application materials directly. Note that in addition to the normal application materials -- CV with names of references, cover letter addressing selection criteria -- I am asking for a sample translation with notes of any single page (or two) from Proclus' Republic Commentary. In order to give you time to do this, the deadline for application is 2 May.
