Expression of Interest – AAP Operating Committee Roles

The role of the Operating Committees is collectively to carry out the day-to-day operations of the AAP that are directed towards achieving the objects of the Association as specified in the Constitution. Each Operating Committee is led by a Committee Convenor and has a Terms of Reference which sets out the constitution and function of the committee. Committee Convenors are supported in their role by a member of the AAP Executive. Further information about roles and responsibilities are included in the Operating Committees Charter.

Expressions of Interest are now open for two Operating Committee convenor roles listed below – of the Diversity and Media committee(s). In addition, nominations are sought to join the Media Committee as an Ordinary Member.

All committee business is conducted by video conferencing (zoom) and convenors are expected to attend quarterly meetings Committee Convenors. The time commitment will vary each month and depending on the role held by an individual. On average, it is anticipated a time commitment of 1 hour per week for convenor(s) and 1-2 hours per month for committee members.

  • Nominations will be reviewed by the AAP’s Succession Planning and Nominations committee who advise the CEO who will then make a recommendation to the AAP Executive.

Media Committee

Committee Function

  • To liaise with media and philosophers to promote philosophy in the media.
  • To work with the Executive in putting on the Alan Saunders Lecture.
  • To work with the Executive in awarding the media prizes.
  • To liaise on a needs be basis with the convenors of other committees on matters of mutual relevance.

Diversity Committee

Convenor

In 2023 the Diversity committee oversaw the Report – Supporting Indigenous Participation in Academic Philosophy in Australasia (URL). A key action from 2024 will be to support the Network of Indigenous Philosophers responsible for developing the AAP’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

Committee Function

To advise Executive, and make recommendations where appropriate, on how best to promote diversity in the profession of Philosophy in Australasia.

  • To devise and carry out projects that support diversity in the profession of Philosophy in Australasia.
  • To monitor the environment for issues concerning diversity in the profession of Philosophy in Australasia.
  • To work with the Executive in awarding the Innovation in Inclusive Curriculum Prize.

 Convenors of Operating Committees Principal responsibilities include:

  • Determining the constitution of the committee, in consultation with the Executive Liaison Officer;
  • Leading, and overseeing effective performance, of the Operating Committee;
  • Ensuring that the Operating Committee functions within its Terms of Reference; Ensuring that Committee members have adequate opportunity to contribute;
  • Contributing to the development of, and monitoring performance against activities assigned to their committee in, the annual Operating Plan;
  • Maintaining relations between the Operating Committee and the Executive, including, in particular, meeting with the nominated Executive Liaison Officer, the Chief Executive Officer and the General Manager;
  • Attending quarterly meetings of General Operating Committees; and
  • Participating in evaluation of the performance of the Operating Committee.

Ordinary Members of Operating Committees Principal responsibilities include:

  • Working effectively with the Committee Convenor and the other members of the Operating Committee;
  • Working in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Association;
  • Reporting performance in an accurate and transparent manner; and
  • Promoting and endorsing the AAP’s Values in all aspects that affect the operations of the Association.
