Victoria University of Wellington will host the annual New Zealand AAP conference later this year. The conference will run from the evening of Sunday December 2 until the afternoon of Thursday December 6.   Details of the conference can be found on the following webpage: http://aapnzconference.yolasite.com/.

The National Philosothon was held on 13 and 14th July, on the Gold Coast on. The AAP sponsored two prizes - AAP Prize for the Most Promising Female Philosopher and the AAP Prize for the Most Promising Male Philosopher. For more information, including pictures, visit the Philosothon site here>>

The Council of the AAP seeks expression of interest from Australasia-based individuals or groups who may wish to take on the editorship of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy.

The AJP is a very highly regarded journal, generally ranked well in the top ten non-specialised philosophy journals in the world. We seek a new editor or editorial team who will maintain the Journal's position. The present editor, Professor Stewart Candlish, will retire from the position at the end of 2013. The new editor should be decided and in place by mid 2013, so that there can be a period of overlap.

Interested parties, who may be individuals, groups, or possibly whole departments, should contact the Secretary of the Association, Tim Oakley, who will see that immediate questions are answered, and who will provide details about the journal, the workload that an editor may expect, and information on the support, both financial and non-financial, available to the editorial office. We request such expressions be made by September 14, 2012. Shortly after this time, it is expected that those who have expressed interest will be asked to submit further, more detailed submissions, and further negotiations will take place.

The Association reserves the right not to appoint any applicant, and also to pursue its own searches and headhunting activities independently of the above procedures.

QS World University Rankings by subject 2012 show that in the top 100 universities for philosophy, there are:

• 40 from North America,
  
• 38 from Europe (inc. UK),
  
• 10 from Australasia,
  
• 8 from Asia (mostly China),
  
• 3 from Central/South America, and
  
• 1 from the Middle East.
  

At the AGM, held on Wednesday 4th July, Professor Garrett Cullity, University of Adelaide, was elected President of the Association in 2012-13. Dr Paul Biegler from the Centre for Human Bioethics, Monash University was awarded the AAP Media Prize for his timely discussion of climate change scepticism in a widely read article in the Sydney Morning Herald (20/12/11) and for an interview on Life Matters on Radio National (7/9/11) that explored the ethical treatment of depression. more>>

This is the last reminder that the earlybird deadline for registering for the 2012 Australasian Association of Philosophy conference at the University of Wollongong is June 1st. After June 1st, registration rates will increase considerably.

All abstracts received by June 1st will be considered for the conference program. After June 1st, we will only consider a limited number of further contributions. After June 8th, no further contributions will be considered.

Postgraduate students who wish to apply for a travel subsidy should notify the organizers by June 1st. Eligibility conditions are described on the conference website.

This conference, to be held at the University of Melbourne on Saturday 2 June 2012, will have a dual focus on:
(a) facilitating thoughtful dialogue in primary school classrooms – as modeled, for example, by the practice of ‘Philosophy for Children’; and
(b) overcoming educational disadvantage.

It will be a full day event organised by the University of Melbourne in partnership with FAPSA (the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations).
