I share the sad news that Edwin Hin-Chung Hung, retired reader in philosophy at the University of Waikato, passed away at home in Hong Kong on 10th July 2026.  Edwin originally studied science at the University of Hong Kong before switching to philosophy at the University of Oxford where he was awarded the D.Phil. He joined the University of Waikato philosophy department in 1971. He published in the philosophy of science and also in the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of logic and the philosophy of language. He published the wide-ranging text The Nature of Science: Problems and Perspectives (1996), the highly original Beyond Kuhn, Scientific Explanation, Theory Structure (2005) and Philosophy of Science Complete, 2nd Edition (2013). He has been an honorary fellow of Linacre College (Oxford) and worked as a visiting scholar at Harvard University, MIT, and the Boston University Center for the Philosophy and History of Science. He retired from his continuing position at the University of Waikato in 2004 and a few years later returned to Hong Kong, his place of birth. There he worked on the philosophy of his ancestor, Confucius, and published, in Chinese, The 12 Cardinal Virtues of Confucius (2024).
