Brian worked in the History and Philosophy of Science Department (as it then was) at Melbourne University, before taking up the position of founding Professor of Philosophy at La Trobe University, where he is remembered particularly for his role in building an extremely successful department. He retired from La Trobe in the early 1990s, and returned to the Philosophy Department (now the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies) of Melbourne University. He worked and published mainly in the areas of philosophy of science, epistemology and metaphysics, and in later years he published books on ethics and social philosophy.
