Welcome to the final newsletter for 2023. The end of the year brings the opportunity to reflect on our successes and look forward to forthcoming events and plans. Earlier this month we capped off a busy year of Centenary celebrations with a series of panel discussions during the CHASS event at Sydney University. Details of the event are included below. So on a more personal note - it was great to meet so many members and get amongst the Philosophy community for a few days. We saw well-attended and lively discussions from audiences both in person and online. My thanks again to everyone who participated as panellists, as panel convenors and as members of the audiences.  

The event also provided Eliza and myself with the chance to meet with a group of indigenous philosophers and allies to discuss the next steps in our work towards a Reconciliation Action Plan. Writing and implementing a plan is a commitment that the AAP made in response to recommendations of the Improving Indigenous Participation in Academic Philosophy report tabled at the 2023 AGM: aap.org.au/Indigenous-participation. I’m looking forward to working with members and community stakeholders on the plan in the coming year, and to working in other ways to increase the diversity and inclusion of philosophy and philosophers within Australasia. Next year we will also work on a new President’s project focussed on Critical Thinking and aimed at universities, schools and professional groups. The project will provide us with a platform to reassert the values of proper training in critical thinking and of philosophical training more broadly. 
I wish all of our members a happy, peaceful, and if you’re planning on getting some writing done, a productive, break. I look forward to meeting and working with more of you in 2024.

In addition to our annual in person July conference, the online conference is an opportunity to present current work to a critical and collegial audience. The conference is designed to give professional philosophers and philosophy postgraduate students the opportunity to present and discuss papers in all areas of philosophy. We particularly welcome philosophers from Oceania and Southeast Asia and Early Career Researchers. 

This year's theme is inclusiveness and diversity in philosophy. We welcome papers which address issues of inclusivity and diversity in philosophy, such as underrepresentation, marginalisation, discrimination, bias, and exclusion.

Annual prize of $500 for an outstanding philosophical paper or book chapter published by an Australasian woman during the previous calendar year.

Annual prize of $500 for the development of innovative approaches to teaching philosophy.

MEDIA PRIZE

2023 AAP Centenary Closing Symposium 

The closing event for the AAP Centenary, a symposium on Australasian Philosophy: Bridging the Past and Present with the Future, took place 30 November - 1 December at the University of Sydney and was held alongside and as part of the 2023 Congress of HASS. Panel sessions over two days showcased distinctive themes concerning the future of Australasian philosophy on Methodologies, Indigenous philosophy, Philosophical progress, Environmental Issues, Philosophy for Children, and Philosophy and Ethics of AI. The symposium opened with a special event to honour the philosophical and personal legacy of Marion Tapper, co-hosted with the Australasian Society for Continental Philosophy.

AUSTRALASIAN PHILOSOTHON 2023

The 2023 Australasian Philosothon was held 29 - 30 September. Schools participated from Victoria,

New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand. In junior and senior divisions, students participated in two days of enthusiastic discussions about big ideas in Community of Inquiry topics.

John Pervan UWA undergraduate, the students and teachers were treated to fascinating philosophical insights.

CALL FOR JUDGES – Annette Baier Prize

The Status of Women in the Philosophy Profession Committee is seeking nominations from interested persons to act as a judge for the Annette Baier Prize.

The committee aims to rotate the members of the judging panels regularly and in accordance with areas of specialty and competence. The committee is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion on judging panels, with specific concern to create mixed-gender panels where possible. 

Self-nominations are welcome from post-PhD persons working in philosophy, broadly conceived, and who are currently affiliated with an Australasian university.

Sagacity – a public philosophy magazine

Postgraduate run and launched in 2022, with support from the AAP. 

Sagacity is a place for topical, public philosophy, and platform for postgraduates to write and engage

with important issues.

Patrick Æ Hutchings (Oxon), was a longtime Editor-in-Chief (Australasia) of Sophia. With a deep intellectual and academic history (with prior studies in the University of Wellington and Oxford University), Patrick was at the time of his passing an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Melbourne.
