2025 STREAMS
HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
Papers from all areas of the History of Philosophy are welcome. The AAP especially encourages papers that contribute to new narratives in the history of philosophy by exploring the philosophical contributions of women and other marginalised figures.
The Australasian Seminar in Early Modern Philosophy (ASEMP) invites papers in Renaissance and Early Modern Philosophy and attendees to gather together for dinner on Wednesday July 9th (location and time TBC).
Convenor: Deb Brown
PHILOSOPHY IN THE DIASPORA
Submissions documenting the impact of philosophical or critical thinking through professional learning programs, consultancies, or collaborative research contracts with partners outside the academy are welcome. The aim of this theme is to share best practice regarding philosophical training in non-traditional contexts and its benefits.
Convenor: Deb Brown
ENABLING DIVERSE KNOWLEDGES
This transdisciplinary stream invites philosophers, scientists, artists, and other scholars and practitioners into conversation and to present work that helps to explore and unpack knowledge and knowledge-making within and across different (cultural and/or disciplinary) boundaries/communities.
One central discussion will be the way Indigenous knowledge and Science can be woven together well. Another discussion will focus on identifying and removing the barriers to further enabling cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary engagement in Philosophy.
We welcome other questions and conversations under this broad theme, such as though not limited to:
What is a knowledge system?
What are the similarities and differences between Indigenous knowledge and Science?
What are some examples of scholars and/or practitioners drawing from different knowledges well? And what can we learn from these examples?
What are the various ways that knowledges can be combined? And what can we learn from these insights?
How can we better recognise, engage with, and enable Indigenous, local, and other marginalised knowledges: In their own right? In conversation with other knowledges? In equal partnership with other knowledges?
Convenor: Krushil Watene
FORMAL METHODS IN PHILOSOPHY
Stream in honour of Max Cresswell
This stream will welcome papers in philosophical logic, philosophy of logic and mathematics, philosophy of language, formal epistemology and, generally speaking, any application of formal (mathematical) methods in philosophical debate. The stream will be dedicated to the memory of Max Cresswell (1932-2024), eminent logician and formal philosopher from New Zealand, who made immense contributions to philosophy in the region and the world, including being a past president of the AAP.
Convenor: Guillermo Badia, Jack Copeland and Diane Proudfoot
