The successful applicant will join a thriving community of researchers in the Philosophy Department and the Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics.

The aims of the ARC project are:

1. To develop a philosophical analysis of the concept of vulnerability, and to assess its implications for conceptions of moral obligation, autonomy and justice.

2. To use this philosophical analysis as the groundwork for developing a theoretically robust account of vulnerability in bioethics.

3. To test the applicability of our theoretical analysis in the domains of research ethics and public health ethics.

The applicant will be expected to develop a research project that complements and/or extends one or more of the project aims. The PhD project will be jointly supervised by Prof Mackenzie and Prof Rogers.

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate degree with first-class honours in a relevant discipline (eg. philosophy, bioethics, the humanities, social sciences, medicine or life sciences, or some combination of these areas), or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications, such as publications or a Masters degree with a substantial research component.

For further information and discussion regarding this project, candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Mackenzie: telephone: +61 2 9850 8865; email: catriona.mackenzieATmq.edu.au or Professor Rogers: telephone +61 2 9850 8858; email: wendy.rogersATmq.edu.au.

The scholarship pays a living allowance currently $22,860 per annum tax exempt (2011), and the tenure is 3.5 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure. Office space and additional support for projects and conference travel will be available from the Faculty.

This scholarship is open to domestic applicants.
